How this calculator works

The calculator first computes your annual withdrawal amount as a simple percentage of your portfolio value. It then determines how long that portfolio will last by solving the present value annuity formula using your inflation-adjusted (real) return rate.

Portfolio duration is calculated using the present value annuity formula:

Years = −log(1 − (Portfolio × r) / Withdrawal) / log(1 + r)

r = real return rate · when real return ≥ withdrawal rate → indefinite

The 4% rule explained

The 4% rule originated from the Trinity Study, a landmark 1998 paper by three professors at Trinity University. They analyzed historical stock and bond returns from 1926–1995 and found that a 4% annual withdrawal rate had a very high probability of lasting 30 years across all historical market cycles — including the Great Depression.

Is the 4% rule still valid?
